Mr. Miroslav Pinak is the Head of the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section within the Division of Radiation, Transport & Waste Safety at the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In this position, Mr. Pinak is responsible for managing the work of the Section, which includes such activities as the development of the Radiation Safety Standards and guidance documents in the area of radiation protection of workers, patients, public and the environment. In addition to the development of the standards, he oversees the IAEA’s assistance in their application in the national regulatory and radiation safety frameworks of the IAEA member states. His Section also provides for the Secretariat for the Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC) and the Agency’s Radiation Safety Technical Services for the IAEA’s occupationally exposed workers.
Mr. Pinak holds a Doctor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Tokyo and a Master’s degree in radiation dosimetry and application of ionizing radiation from the Czech Technical University in Prague.
He has more than 30 years’ experience in radiation effects, radiation protection, and radiation safety. Prior to joining the IAEA, he was a principal scientist and head of the Radiation Protection and Radiation Effects Unit at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). From 2006 to 2011, he was seconded by the JAEA to the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, where he was the liaison officer for the revision of the International Basic Safety Standards (BSS) GSR Part 3. In the last decade, Mr. Pinak has actively participated in international discussions by presenting IAEA views on the current radiation protection system.
