Title of Presentation

45+ Years of ELF, RF and Microwave Exposure Assessment and Radiation Protection

Dr Ken Joyner

In 1975 Ken was awarded his Ph.D. from Latrobe University for the study of ionospheric radio wave propagation and has since been involved in the measurement of electromagnetic energy (EME) and the development of standards for the measurement of diverse sources of EME.

Ken has had extensive experience in numerous areas of telecommunications, radio base station design and performance, antenna design and performance, EMI/EMC, compliance measurements for mobile devices and research into the possible biological effects of EME and related standards and regulations. He has worked with many national government agencies of telecommunications, health and environment with the primary aims of harmonization of standards for the measurement and control of EME exposure.

Ken’s employment history includes Lecturer Physics Department University of the South Pacific Fiji; Leader Radiofrequency and Microwave Section Australian Radiation Laboratory ARL (now ARPANSA); Section Manager EMC & Antenna Research Telstra Research Laboratory; Global Director EME Strategy & Regulatory Affairs Motorola USA: Executive Technical Advisor, Standards & Technology Enabling Team, R & D Centre Samsung Electronics Korea. During his 28 years as a reservist in the Royal Australian Air Force attaining the rank of Wing Commander, Ken implemented safe work practices for exposure of personnel, fuels and ordnance to various military sources of EME.

Ken is currently Chairman Emeritus of the Mobile & Wireless Forum (MWF, www.mwfai.org) which is an international association of companies with an interest in mobile and wireless communications including the evolution to 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) and the current membership includes Apple, Cisco, Ericsson, Google, Honor, Huawei, Intel, LG, Motorola Mobility, Motorola Solutions, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony and Zebra.
