Stephen Long commenced working for ARPANSA (then ARL) in 1996 after completing a PhD in nuclear physics. Stephen spent much of his time between 1996 and 2001 at Maralinga, carrying out measurements to ascertain the efficacy of the rehabilitation program. Since then Stephen has been a technical manager in ARPANSA’s environmental laboratories, which maintain facilities for measuring radioactivity levels in a diverse range of environmental samples. Between 2015 and 2017, Stephen lead the drafting team revising the Australian standard for radiation safety in laboratories. In 2017, Stephen lead the team conducting an IAEA Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisal Service mission to Malaysia. Since then, Stephen has lead similar missions to Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
